The Pitkalija fruit and vegetable market is the marketing centre for the collection and disposal of local agricultural produce in Malta and it is based in Ta’ Qali. The Malta Food Agency regulates the sales and marketing of all local food produce dropped off by registered farmers at marketing agents integrated within the system at Pitkalija.
Registered vendors including supermarkets, grocers and hawkers can purchase the fresh produce within a short period of time after being dropped off by farmers ensuring fresh, high-quality produce is consistently available for our consumption. Through a barcode system, the agency registers and records all the farmers produce on an electronic system in real-time and registers all the sales made in the day. The system allows for transparency and traceability of the sale of local fresh produce giving a level-playing field for everyone involved.
